New Year Wishes, Biya Calls for Renewed Solidarity and Multilateralism

Cameroon’s Head of State, President Paul Biya yesterday January 10th, 2025, addressed the Diplomatic Corps, and thanked them for their continuous support and extending his best wishes for the New Year.

The occasion that took place at the Unity Palace, Friday, January 10, 2025, saw the President highlight global and domestic challenges while underscoring Cameroon’s commitment to multilateralism, peace, and stability.

President Biya began his remarks by thanking the international community for supporting Cameroon’s successful bid to preside over the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly. This milestone, he noted, reflects the collective endorsement of Cameroon’s leadership in addressing critical global issues.

“Our mandate, which began in September 2024, will conclude in September 2025. This provides us with a unique opportunity to work collaboratively toward renewing multilateralism—a vital framework our world desperately needs,” President Biya stated.

He commended the outcomes of the “Summit of the Future” held in New York last September, which culminated in the adoption of groundbreaking documents, including the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact, and the Declaration on Future Generations. These, he remarked, are foundational for addressing the challenges of a rapidly evolving global landscape.

Acknowledging the turbulent state of global affairs, President Biya lamented the persistence of conflicts and crises worldwide. From Ukraine to Sudan, Lebanon to Gaza, and Haiti, he described these regions as theaters of “human tragedy” that continue to challenge the international community’s resolve.

“The specter of a nuclear war, an unimaginable catastrophe, is becoming an increasingly worrying reality,” he warned, emphasizing the urgency for collective action to prevent further escalation.

Dedication to Global Peace

President Biya further identified the resurgence of unilateralism, violations of international norms, and entrenched national interests as root causes of these conflicts. Despite the grim outlook, he maintained a resolute stance, asserting, “This is not our destiny. We must not succumb to despair.”

Reiterating Cameroon’s dedication to global peace and stability, President Biya assured the Diplomatic Corps of his nation’s continued efforts to foster dialogue, peaceful conflict resolution, and sustainable development. He praised the United Nations as the ideal platform for dealing with humanity’s shared challenges, calling for renewed trust and investment in multilateralism.

“Our shared organization, the United Nations, is best placed to guide humanity toward unity, survival, and progress,” he affirmed, urging the global community to work toward an equitable and inclusive multilateral system.
