Former UFC heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou, has successfully ventured into the realm of boxing, securing a notable position in the World Boxing Council’s (WBC) official list of top 10 heavyweight fighters.
The announcement was made during the WBC’s 2023 convention on Tuesday where Ngannou’s impressive rank at No. 10 was disclosed, surpassing esteemed fighters such as Joe Joyce from Britain and the highly-regarded Croatian boxer Filip Hrgovic.
This accomplishment follows Ngannou’s standout performance against Tyson Fury in their exhibition bout last October, showcasing exceptional skills and resilience, despite ultimately conceding the match by a split decision.
The newfound ranking not only adds a feather to Ngannou’s cap but also provides him with the opportunity to pursue a rematch with Tyson Fury, a desire that has been paramount for him since their last encounter.
“The rematch is what I want next the most. As for right now, I feel like there is a lot of options for me, but I want to choose wisely, and I would go for the rematch first,” Ngannou expressed.
“My best scenario in boxing is to wait for Fury. If Usyk can step out and let me fight Fury, I’ll fight Fury, then I’ll let them do whatever they do. I’ll go back, maybe do some MMA fight and come back with some people in boxing,” he added.
Ngannou’s elevation to the WBC’s heavyweight rankings underscores his raw power, athleticism, and unyielding determination.
Transitioning from mixed martial arts (MMA) to boxing, Ngannou has demonstrated an exceptional ability to adapt and excel in this new arena, earning respect from both fans and experts alike.
His inclusion in the top 10 rankings not only broadens the spectrum of possibilities for Ngannou in boxing but also positions him as a significant contender in this fiercely competitive division.
With highly talented heavyweight fighters vying for supremacy, Ngannou’s explosive knockout power and imposing presence make him a formidable force.
His recent clash with Fury further solidifies his standing as a legitimate contender for the WBC heavyweight title.
