The donations were handed on Sunday May 15. It is part of the military’s outreach program as the nation gears up to the celebration of the National Day on May 20.
The donation was spearheaded by Lt Col Rene, Commander the sixth Rapid Intervention Battalion in the South West Region.

According to reports, the donation was in a bid to show appreciation to the population for security measures taken on April 24 to maintain peace.

“We have seen what the population of Talangaye has done, they came as one man to fight against the terrorists. We came to appreciate them and they should understand that we are together, we are are one. Here in Talangaye, today we are saying that we are united,” the Colonel stated.

The donation comprised bags of salt, bags of rice, flour, beans, fish cartons and other materials such as machettes, to strengthen the population. There was also free medical screening.

According to the inhabitants, such gestures should be carried out continuously. They as well called on the government to establish a military base in their community.

“We think that this support should continue, to give us security, to give us peace so that we should live in peace, because there are plenty of threats in our community. So we pray that the government should put a base for the military here, so we can always be in peace.” an inhabitant said.

BIR officers have in recent weeks carried out similar gestures in different villages across the South West region.
