Nigeria: Biafra militiamen kill two police officers in fresh secessionist reawakening

At least two members of the Nigerian police force have died after elements of the Eastern Security Network (ESN), a secessionist army fighting for the Statehood of ‘Biafra’, from the rest of Nigeria, attacked them, presumably on the road.

An amateur video shot by the ESN, saw the two dead officers lying in the middle of the highway, with bullet wounds on various parts of their bodies, including headshots.

The motive of the attack is undoubtedly the reawakening of the long-abandoned struggle for an Independent Biafran State.

Though the reawakened struggle started gradually, it aggravated clashes with State soldiers, soon after the extradition of the Biafran ringleader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya to Nigeria.

Many of these militia groups have galvanized and armed young men ready to battle against the perceived enemy, the Nigerian army.

Faced with similar issues, Nigeria and Cameroon who are very close border nations have recently held talks of a joint military assault, aimed at ending all secessionist activities along their shared borders.

Joint efforts between both nations to fight secessionists started before the agreed military assault. This could be seen with the arbitrary arrest and extradition of Ambazonian leader, Sesseko Ayuk Tabe and his aides in January 2018.
