Nigeria immigration investigates woman who tore husband’s passport at airport

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has opened an investigation into an incident at Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos, where a woman was captured on video tearing up a Nigerian passport. The incident has raised significant concerns and prompted a response from immigration authorities.

Local media reports indicate that the woman, identified as Mrs. Favour Igiebor, was seen on the video admitting to the destruction of the passport, which was reportedly her husband’s. Despite her confession, airport officials reportedly took no immediate action and allowed her to leave the airport with her two children.

In response to the incident, NIS spokesperson Kenneth Udo confirmed that the Comptroller General of Immigration, K.N. Nandap, has ordered an investigation. Mrs. Igiebor is expected to be summoned for questioning as part of the probe.

The NIS has underscored that if the allegations are substantiated, Mrs. Igiebor’s actions could be in violation of the Immigration Act 2015. This legislation outlines specific legal consequences for the deliberate destruction of a passport.

Under Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015, deliberately damaging a passport is classified as a serious offence. The Act stipulates potential penalties for such actions, including fines, imprisonment, or both, as detailed in Section 10(h).

The NIS emphasized its commitment to upholding the law and ensuring national security. If found guilty, Mrs. Igiebor could face significant legal repercussions, including financial penalties and possible imprisonment.
