Nigerian crossdresser, Bobrisky, freed from jail

The Nigerian crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, has been freed after spending over four months in jail for abusing the Nigerian currency, the naira.

Nigerian media outlets reported that he walked out of the Kirikiri Correctional Center in Lagos this August 5 in the company of friends.

Photos that surfaced online showed Bobrisky celebrating his release.

The controversial social media figure, who identifies as female but admitted to being male during his conviction, served a six-month sentence pronounced on April 12 by Justice Abimbola Awogboro of the Lagos High Court.

He was found guilty of abusing the Naira.

The court had stated that the sentence would begin from March 24, the day he was arrested.

While in jail, it was reported that Bobrisky’s rights, owing to gender issues, were being violated.

These claims prompted a response from the Lagos State Correctional Service, which stated that the allegations were misleading.

The correctional facility clarified that Bobrisky was allocated a shared cell with other convicted inmates.

“There are no en-suite or ‘one-bedroom flat’ style cells in our custodial centre, as the cell block infrastructure is built as shared buildings to accommodate multiple inmates,” the correctional facility said in a statement.

Before his incarceration, Bobrisky had been a controversial figure on social media, known for his viral cross-dressing content.
