Nigerian Elections: Peter Obi declared winner of must-win Abuja FCT

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has been declared the victor of the Nigerian presidential election in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

After the summing of all six area councils in the FCT, Obi defeated Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), while Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), finished a distant third.

Mr. Obi received 281,717 votes, while Tinubu of the ruling APC received 90,902 votes and Atiku Abubakar of the PDP received 74,199 votes.

According to the Nigerian constitution, a candidate must have the largest number of votes nationwide and at least 25% of the votes in two-thirds of the 36 states and Federal Capital Territory (Abuja) to win the first round.

What this means, therefore, is that despite leading so far, Tinubu cannot be legally declared the winner.
