Cameroon: Journalists suspend work to pay homage to Martinez Zogo

Journalists of Nkongsamba FM, a radio station in the Moungo Division of the Littoral Region, briefly suspended broadcasts from Thursday, January 26 through Friday the 27th to pay homage to murdered journalist Martinez Zogo.

Listeners of the radio station confirmed there were no broadcasts but only music on the station yesterday as the journalists mourned their slain colleague.

“Since morning that I have been listening to the radio, all I hear is religious music,” a listener of Nkongsamba FM told MMI on Friday.

“There should be press freedom. The journalists should be free to tell the public what is true and what is not true in this country,” the listener said.

According to Augustin Yonkue, an editor at the media house, they temporarily dropped their mics and pens to let the public know that they “refuse this way of solving situations”.

The journalists of Nkongsamba FM are among many journalists across the country who have rallied to decry the gruesome murder of Martinez Zogo, calling for Government to ensure the perpetrators are prosecuted.

Journalists in Yaounde, where he practiced, Bamenda and other parts of the country took turns to mourn the former managing director of Amplitude FM, a Yaounde-based radio station.

Martinez Zogo was abducted on January 17 by unidentified men on his way back from work, and his mutilated body was discovered on the outskirts of Yaounde on Sunday, January 22, when it was already decomposing.

The latest of many calls for the prosecution of his killers came from the French Government, which, yesterday, said the government must honour its promise to bring the perpetrators to book.
