Nollywood Actor Pope Odonwodo, aka Junior Pope, is dead

At 21:15 on April 10th, 2024, following our earlier publication stating that Junior Pope had not died as earlier reported, and at 10:19 am on April1 1l 2024, following confirmation from the Actors Guild of Nigeria that he eventually was certified to have died. 

The news that tragedy has struck the Nigerian film industry, Nollywood again, was first made public by the filmmaker Sam Olatunji who confirmed the passing on Wednesday, April 10 of actor Junior Pope. He shared the heartbreaking news that Pope and three others lost their lives in a tragic boating accident.

The news caused a wave of shock and sadness among those in the entertainment industry, as fans and colleagues alike expressed their deep sorrow and disbelief over the unexpected passing of a highly skilled artist. Pope Odonwodo, born on May 7, 1984, in Bamenda, Cameroon, has captivated audiences with his exceptional performances in numerous Nollywood productions.

“Junior Pope Passes on ?. Sad day for Nollywood. Four actors including Jnr Pope fell into Anam River on their way to location and their bodies have been recovered. What a sad day for Nollywood. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family. Multiple sources confirm this sad development to us,” wrote Sam Olatunji in a heartfelt Instagram post, confirming the tragic incident.

Pope Odonwodo’s career in the Nigerian film industry has been defined by his impressive performances in highly regarded films like “Wrong Initiation” (2018), “1951” (2021), and “Honey Money” (2023). His unwavering commitment to his work and his talent for giving characters depth had endeared him to both fans and colleagues.

In response to the news, colleagues in the entertainment industry, including actors, directors, and insiders, shared their sorrow and honoured Pope’s lasting impact.

Another filmmaker tweeted: “Heartbreaking news about the passing of Junior Pope. He was a talented actor with a bright future ahead. My deepest sympathies go out to his family and loved ones. May his soul find eternal peace.”

Funke Akindele-Bello expressed her profound sadness over the loss of Junior Pope and the other individuals involved in the tragic accident through her social media accounts. “May his soul rest in eternal peace. My condolences go out to their families during this challenging period,” she said.

He got married to Jennifer Awele in 2014, and they are blessed with three children.
