Uneasy calm reigns in Ako subdivision, Donga Mantung Division in the North West region of Cameroon this Wednesday, June 2nd, 2021 as most locals remain indoors for fear of the unknown.
Some people in the area, talking to Mimi Mefo Info on phone, say at least seven people were killed in three villages by military men deployed to the area from Nkambe.
“The military killed innocent people in Ekuru, Abua, and Zoeche villages. They accused the people of either being separatist fighters or collaborators of those seeking the Independence of Southern Cameroons,” an anonymous source stated.
Those killed include John Nweku Nkeveh, Mabo Gbagshi Ashaga, Sango, twin (sons of Nkambu Jonathan), and one other unidentified person from Abua village.
According to reports, one other suspect has been taken to the military camp in Ako Town.
Last week, separatists detonated a local explosive in Jeyu village wounding two soldiers en route to Nkambe onboard a motorcycle. To the inhabitants, the incident may have led to the deployment of military men in the locality.
According to a source at Government High School Ako, there are plans for thirty-one students who registered for the Cameroon General Certificate of Education, GCE 2021 session to write in Nkambe and not in their examination center in Ako. Though no official reason has been stated, people suspect that it may be for security reasons.
Besides these two recent incidents of insecurity, Ako subdivision that shares borders with Taraba state in the Federal Republic of Nigeria has been enjoying relative calm with activities coming back to normal.
