North West: CJTU to honor fallen journalists on Press Freedom Day

By David Atangana

The North West chapter of the Cameroon Journalist Trade Union (CJTU) is set to commemorate World Press Freedom Day on May 3 by honoring reporters in various categories in memory of six fallen colleagues.

Last year, CJTU NW recognized some members of the organization for their commitment to defending press freedom.

This year, they are extending their recognition to fallen journalists who have left an indelible mark on the profession.

In an earlier announcement, the Chapter President of CJTU North West, Ignatius Nji, said the awards will go to practicing journalists in the Region.

“We shall be honoring our deceased colleagues: Peterkins Manyong, Eric Motomu, Michael Ndi, Anye Nde Nsoh, Rebecca Njeme, and Fawa Agatha,” Mr Nji wrote.

Six categories have been established to recognize the contributions of the deceased journalists in the field of journalism in the region. These include:

  1. Peterkins Manyong Memorial Award: Honoring Political Reporting
  2. Anye Ndeh Soh Memorial Award: Sports Reporting
  3. Michel Ndi Memorial Award: Human Interest Reporting
  4. Eric Motomu Memorial Award: Critical Writing
  5. Rebecca Njeme Memorial Award: Gender Reporting
  6. Fawa Agatha Memorial Award: Women’s Issues Reporting

The CJTU Chapter president said the awards aim to recognize excellence and dedication within the journalistic community while also commemorating the legacy of those who have passed away.

Entries for the awards closed on April 15, 2024, and laureates will be announced today during a ceremony in Nkwen, Bamenda.

During the 2023 World Press Freedom Day, CJTU North West awarded journalists and members of the organization for their active role in defending press freedom.

Recipients included Bakah Derick, Ngongsong Jean Marie, Roseline Obah, Ambe Macmillan, Choves Loh, and Pierre Anumfack.
