Opposition politicians sting Paul Biya for delivering «empty» speech

Cameroon President Paul Biya has celebrated the country’s democratic process stating that it will enhance peace and development.

In a state of the nation’s address Thursday, December 31, 2020, the head of state said “…our democracy is on course. Cameroon has taken just a few decades to put in place democratic institutions. This is something that many countries have fought wars for centuries before achieving”.

Reacting to the statement from the president of the republic, the deputy national communication secretary of Cameroon Renaissance Movement (CRM) party says democratic institutions that are fanning insecurity and underdevelopment throughout the national territory are not worth it.

Tayong Fah Elvis speaking to Mimi Mefo Info on phone states, “Paul Biya in his speech has lied to himself, the people of Cameroon and to God Almighty. He does not master efficient democratic process reason why he has made such outrageous comments that Cameroon is on the right path to efficient democracy. The fact that there is war in Cameroon, development is stagnant and the economy is in a decline are clear indications that the institutions are failing”.

To the official of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement political party, the institutions put in place have mainly old militants of the ruling Cameroon People Democratic Movement, CPDM, that have been recycled to continue their process of poor governance practiced for close to four decades under the regime of president Paul Biya. He decries the poor electoral process that ushered the officials to the institutions.

According to Dr. Nick Ngwayam, an educationist and militant of CPDM party speaking on Equinoxe television, organizers of the major national dialogue turned what was supposed to produce good results and bring peace in Cameroon to fulfill their political gains.

He posits that this explains why the Special Status and other democratic institutions conceived during the Major National Dialogue and put in place are unable to calm flames of tension in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon.

Reacting to the speech of the president, the national president of Popular Action Party (PAP) expressed total disappointment.

To Njang Denis Tabe, “After listening the speech, I have realized that I wasted my time. I am disappointed, shocked and embarrassed. Biya has respected his arrogance and repressive nature by stating that military prowess will solve a purely political problem”.

President Paul Biya’s promise that perpetrators of the Kumba massacre will be brought to book without calling for a proper investigation has not been taken in good faith by some opposition politicians.

“I and the PAP party continue to condemn the killing of little children in a school in Kumba. Despite this, neither the military nor separatist fighters have claimed responsibility. This is why we recommend an independent investigation on the incident not arbitrary killing of suspects as the government has been doing,” Njang Denis stated.

To the national president of the United Cameroon for Peace and Progress party (UCPP), president Paul Biya and his regime talk a lot but do little to ameliorate the living condition of Cameroonians.

Nchia Roland Mua says, “From the speech delivered this evening, it’s very clear to everyone that Cameroon is not governed. President Paul Biya is old and masters nothing concerning the country. This is why UCPP is calling for an anticipated presidential election. Let the CPDM party present a younger candidate”.

Some militants of the ruling party have congratulated President Paul Biya for laying emphases on the respect of COVID-19 measures to stop the spread of the pandemic.
