There is widespread anger following an incident between a Divisional Officer and teacher of Government Bilingual High School, GBHS Ayos in the Centre region.
The DO, Mbey Sandrine who was on tour at the school flared up after the teacher asked her to hold on for students to complete their test before she visits the classroom.
Declaring she was “chef terre” of the area, the DO whose visit was unannounced ordered for the brutalization of the teacher in the presence of his students. The teacher was then taken away by the gendarmes that accompanied her, eventually spending the night behind bars.
Her action has met with a lot of mixed reactions, as some want her fired.
“There is very little respect for the teaching staff in this country and since children only copy what they see adults doing, we should not be surprised at the lack of respect of the pupils towards the teachers” says a social media user.
“She must immediately be relieved of her duties. When will the exemplary Republic begin?” Asks another. Recently, the government of Cameroon came under fire for doing very little to ensure teachers are respected and protected.
Others have also taken to social media to make calls for the immediate release of the teacher. DO Mbey Sandrine has however, not yet reacted to the online condemnations.
The recent happening adds to a series of violence in schools across the country threatening teachers’ safety. Many also say it shows the unchecked power some administrators have, making them more of bosses than servants to the population.
