Over 60 families affected by floods in Edea receive matrasses from government – Is that what the people need?

Some 60 affected families in last week’s Edea floods have received matrasses from the Minister of Territorial Administration, Paul Atanga Nji.

The families were yesterday Monday, offered matrasses and some foodstuffs by the Minister on behalf of President Paul Biya.

More than 200 families were hit by the torrential rains of August 20, 2020, and the after-effects of the heavy rains are still very visible in the town 5 days on. Some families who were left with inundated homes in Edea complained of having lost almost all of their belongings – with only a few properties left to show for.

Speaking to Cameroon-info.net, Ilouga Makon, one of the victims of the disaster said “I lost everything. I only found my birth certificate. When I receive all this from the minister it really makes me happy”

Meanwhile, Minister Paul Atanga Nji cautioned inhabitants of the affected quarters to be “extra cautious in constructing houses in such disaster-prone zones” so as to limit future disasters. “We ask the population to collaborate with the authorities. Avoid constructing in risky zones. There are people who have already been compensated to leave such zones but will not leave. The population should learn to respect the authorities. We have heard all your pleas and we would table them to the Head of States” he advised.

The heavy rains equally hit the economic capital, Douala within the same period, causing an increase in the water levels of the River Wouri thereby flooding more than 60% of the entire city.
