PAP Endorses Biya as Candidate for Next Year’s Election

The People’s Action Party (PAP), a faction that defected from the Popular Action Party, has expressed its support for President Paul Biya.COP

This was made known in a press conference held over the weekend. That was at its headquarters in Kumba, Meme Division of Cameroon’s Southwest Region.

The chairperson of the party, Albert Albert Mukwele Ngoh, believes in 91-year-old President Paul Biya. To him, Biya stands a good chance to drive Cameroon’s development forward.

“We want to align ourselves to President Paul Biya’s vision 2035 to have Cameroon as an emergent nation,” said Albert Albert Mukwele.

“We will actively participate in strategies that expedite the decentralisation process,” he added. To him, they support the process that addresses the ongoing Anglophone crisis and drives import substitution, among other things.

“On behalf of PAP, we stand to endorse the candidacy of President Paul Biya in the upcoming 2025 presidential elections. His undeniable efforts in maintaining peace and development in Cameroon are proof of his good intentions towards the advancement of Cameroon,” he added.

So, the party has called on supporters to vote for Biya in next year’s presidential elections. Their essence for joining the presidential majority is to foster growth and help Biya achieve his vision of 2035.

Defected PAP Aims for Parliamentary, Council Representations

The party’s chairperson said they are aiming for three positions in both parliamentary and councils. In 2026, Cameroon will be electing parliamentarians and mayors for another five-year term.

The People’s Action Party wants to drive its influence through the councils and parliament.

“I will make sure that I put in all resources for the People’s Action Party to be represented at the parliament and also have councils,” he said. It’s through that, according to him, that they can exercise their strength as a party. That he says is achievable when they align behind Paul Biya.

Cameroonians head to the polls next year to elect a new leader. President Paul of the ruling Cameroon People’s Party has been in power since 1982. There have been calls for him to run for another mandate. However, he has not indicated whether he will contest or not.

Meanwhile, before the outing of the People’s Action Party, the Popular Action Party had backed Akere Muna.

Muna has declared his intention to contest the 2025 presidential election. He is the leader of the Now Movement, which has been instrumental in the fight against corruption.

PAP President Njang Denis, unlike Albert Albert Mukwele, sees the vision instead of Akere Muna. Talking to the Horizon newspaper, Njang Denis described the Kumba press conference as a distraction.

People’s Action Party Created In 1991

During the Kumba Press Conference, Albert Mukwele said PAP was officially recognised in 1991 by its vision leader, Prof. Victor Mukwelle.

Gathering to reaffirm their commitment to the ideals that united them as a party and nation, he said the moment marks the beginning of a journey toward a brighter future.

Their mission is to respect Cameroon’s sovereignty, foster tolerance, defend democracy, and drive economic growth.

He said since its existence, PAP has presented two candidates for elections. That’s Prof. Victor Mukwelle in 1992 and Ayah Paul in 2011.

“So in these challenging times, we at PAP refuse to be instruments of disorder or division. We choose to be agents of unity and positive change, he added.
