Participants of 74 Billion FCFA youth program decry poor treatment, violation of contracts

Participants of the ENABLE YOUTH CAMEROON program have said the project is not going as planned.

The ENABLE YOUTH program, at the beginning in 2018 was entrusted to the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) associated with the PDCVA and financed by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to the tune of 75 billion.

It however witnessed a series of setbacks, and was delayed.

It has again kicked off, but participants are still not satisfied.

“It was planned that we would be accommodated one person per room but instead we are four per room,” complained a participant.

The agripreneurs selected for the project are housed at a center in Mbebe along the Kribi road.

“We were sent back home when the project experienced challenges, but we were later called back following the injection of more funds into the plan,” said one of the participants.

The aggrieved participant revealed that “according to the new contracts, we are entitled to 15,000 FCFA for accessories, 30,000 FCFA monthly for feeding, we are entitled to health care and others.”

Upon arrival at the center, even money meant for transport, he says, was not given them.

The training however kicked off as planned, he says.

It was untill halfway into the training that they realised they were hardly getting anything out of it.

In addition to the not-so-conducive living spaces, the participant says the financial obligations owed them are yet to be fulfilled.

“We never received anything like money, in terms of nutrition it’s the same… we are abandoned here and starving,” he added.

ENABLE Youth Cameroon is a development initiative that focuses on the promotion of youth entrepreneurship in agribusiness.

It was approved as a Component of a larger non-concessionary loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to the Cameroon Government. The project is under the supervisory authority of the Ministry of Agriculture.
