President Paul Biya has signed a new decree re-adjusting some sticky issues in the October 22, 2018 decree which implemented changes at the Cameroon General Certificate of Education GCE Board.
In decree No. 2019/100 signed on March 4, 2019, representatives of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Buea, Public and Private Schools Parents Teachers Association (PTA) are now statutory members of the GCE Board.
In an earlier decree signed in October last year, the above representatives were not included.
Weeks after the publication of the decree, representatives of five teachers’ trade unions that include Cameroon Teachers Trade Union (CATTU,) Presbyterian Education Authority (PEATU), Catholic Workers Trade Union (CEWOTU), Baptist Teachers Trade Union (BATTUC) Teachers Association of Cameroon (TAC) petitioned the President of the Republic asking for adjustment.
A decree readjusting the number of GCE Board Members comes as a welcome relief to education stakeholder in the North West and South West regions of Cameroon. Despite this, other critical minds think the powers of the main examination organizing board GCE have been reduced considerably thereby diluting the originality of Anglo-Saxon education in Cameroon.
