Paul Biya Silent on Buhari’s Death Despite Longstanding Diplomatic Ties

Cameroonian President Paul Biya has yet to issue a statement following the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari. Buhari passed away on July 12, 2025, in a London clinic. This lack of public response marks a departure from Biya’s longstanding pattern of promptly acknowledging the deaths of regional and global leaders.

As of July 18, no tribute has been posted on the official website or social media channels of the Cameroonian presidency. The absence of a formal message has sparked regional discussions and raised questions among political analysts.

Historical Cooperation Between Buhari and Biya

During Buhari’s presidency (2015–2023), the Nigerian and Cameroonian governments maintained close security cooperation, particularly in counterterrorism operations against Boko Haram and in managing separatist unrest in Cameroon’s Anglophone regions.

In a notable example of bilateral collaboration, Buhari’s administration extradited leaders of the Ambazonia separatist movement to Cameroon in 2018. The move drew criticism from international human rights groups but was viewed positively by authorities in Yaoundé.

“The security collaboration between the two governments under Buhari was unprecedented,” said Dr. Wilfred Mbah, a political scientist based in Buea. “For Biya to say nothing now is highly irregular.”

Public Reaction and Expert Commentary

Biya, who has held office since 1982, is known for regularly issuing condolences or congratulations to heads of state and other public figures. His silence following Buhari’s death has prompted speculation.

Some observers believe the lack of response may be attributed to Biya’s advanced age. He turned 92 in February. It is also due to possible limitations on his public engagements. Others interpret it as a political signal or internal oversight.

“Either this is a calculated move or a sign that President Biya is no longer fully in control of the day-to-day running of the state,” said a former Cameroonian diplomat who requested anonymity.

Buhari’s death was confirmed on the same date that Biya announced his intention to run again.

Tributes from African and Global Leaders

Leaders across the continent have issued statements in tribute to Buhari, acknowledging his contributions to Nigeria’s security, regional diplomacy, and anti-corruption efforts. Messages have been released by the African Union, the governments of Ethiopia, Rwanda, South Africa, and several Western partners.

“President Buhari was a pillar of stability in West Africa,” read a statement from the African Union Commission. “His legacy in promoting peace and governance will endure.”

Unanswered Questions Remain

Despite the flurry of regional condolences, no comment has been made by Biya or his administration. The situation has generated growing interest from the Cameroonian public, particularly on social media, where questions continue to mount.

For now, the presidency remains silent. Meanwhile, observers are left to interpret the implications of that silence.
