Pioneer Cameroonian Female Lawyer, Barrister Weledji Mariam, Dies Aged 86

Cameroon mourns the loss of a trailblazing legal luminary as Barrister Mrs. Weledji Mariam, affectionately known as Mami Weledji, passed away earlier this morning in Limbe. A pioneer in her field, Mami Weledji made history as the first Cameroonian woman lawyer to be called to the Cameroon Bar, leaving an indelible mark on the legal landscape of the nation.

Born on December 13, 1937, in Bamenda, Mami Weledji’s journey to becoming a legal icon began with her early education at Convent School Soppo Buea, where she earned her First School Leaving Certificate. She furthered her studies at the Holy Rosary College, Enugu, obtaining a Teachers Grade II certificate. Her academic prowess continued with the attainment of the General Certificate of Education (O.L) in June 1958 and the General Certificate of Education (A.L) in June 1960.

Mami Weledji’s pursuit of knowledge led her to prestigious institutions abroad. She attended the University of Oxford from 1965 to 1966, graduating with a Diploma in Administration. Subsequently, she enrolled at the Holborn College of Law in London, earning her L.L.B with 2nd Class Honors in June 1968. Her academic journey concluded at the University College London from 1968 to 1969.

In October 1968, Mami Weledji made history as she became a Barrister-at-Law and an Honorable member of the Grays Inn. Returning to her homeland, she was enrolled as a Barrister and Solicitor of the West Cameroon Supreme Court on June 9, 1969. Fueled by her passion for the legal profession, she founded the Ngede Law Firm in Limbe, where she served as the head until her passing.

Beyond her legal achievements, Mami Weledji’s legacy extended to the international stage. She served as the President of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) Cameroon from 1994 to 2000, earning the title of FIDA Cameroon Honorary Life President in recognition of her exemplary service.

A force to be reckoned with, Mami Weledji was not only a legal luminary but also a business magnate and real estate giant. Her notable investment, the HOLIDAY INN RESORT in Limbe, stands as a testament to her entrepreneurial acumen.

Mami Weledji’s impact reached far beyond the courtroom, as she emerged as a fierce gender activist. Her contributions to the advancement of women’s rights were manifold, making her a beacon for aspiring female lawyers and activists alike.

In her personal life, Mami Weledji was a loving mother to five sons and one daughter, leaving behind a family that reflects her strength, resilience, and commitment to excellence.

As Cameroon bids farewell to this extraordinary woman, the legacy of Barrister Mrs. Weledji Mariam will continue to inspire generations of legal professionals and advocates for gender equality. May her soul rest in peace.
