Poisoned peppersoup kills five in Nigeria
Five individuals reportedly lost their lives in the Afashio Community of Uzairue, in the Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. The incident happened after the victims allegedly consumed a dish of poisoned pepper soup. Sources claim that Peculiar, a 16-year-old girl who was the ex-girlfriend of one of the deceased, made it.
The Daily Post reports that two brothers lost their lives, and three others, including a young woman, have been identified as their friends. Peculiar allegedly poisoned the soup to take revenge on her ex-boyfriend after their relationship ended.
The Nigerian army has apprehended the young woman, and she is currently in custody as investigations continue. Footage from social media reportedly depicts the families of the victims making the heartbreaking discovery. This was when they entered the room to find their loved ones deceased after growing worried about their absence.
Witnesses suggest that Peculiar might have intentionally used the poisoned pepper soup as a form of retribution. However, after allegedly bringing the soup to her former partner, he inadvertently shared the dish with his friends, leading to their demise.
Local authorities have launched an official investigation, although they have not yet determined the specifics regarding the cause of death.
“The command is aware, but investigation to unravel the cause of death is ongoing,” said Moses Yamu, a press officer with the Edo State Police Command, in a statement.
Residents in Edo State are in a state of anticipation as they await additional information from officials. A significant number of individuals are advocating for a thorough investigation into the details of the case, with the hope that it will clarify the factors that contributed to this tragic result. Investigators are looking into Peculiar’s possible involvement and any motives related to her alleged actions, aiming to clarify her role in the incident.
This incident has ignited conversations within the community regarding the importance of mental health awareness, effective conflict resolution, and supporting young individuals as they navigate their relationships. The community is, however, actively pursuing answers and justice for the five young lives lost in this tragic and seemingly preventable incident as the investigation unfolds.
