President Paul Biya confesses strength of Boko Haram insurgents, calls for military alliance

The devastating effect of the activities of Boko Haram insurgents in the Far North of Cameroon featured conspicuously in the speech of President Paul Biya.

Addressing diplomatic representatives in Cameroon Thursday January 9th 2020 in a ceremony to present New Year wishes to the President at the unity palace, Paul Biya launched a call for member countries of the Lake Chad basin to join forces and put an end to Boko Haram insurgency.

To the president of Cameroon, terrorism, climate change, migration and economic hardship are international issues that demands a collective effort for an effective long lasting positive solution.

Overwhelmed by the ravaging and growing violence in many parts of the world, president Paul Biya questions diplomatic representatives saying “would the world continue to live in a period of a commercial war”? .To the president, the international community has to do something to better address the issue.

As concerns the Anglophone crisis, the president enumerated measures his government has taken in the course of the year 2019 to convince separatist fighters to lay their arms. Paul Biya mentioned the major national dialogue, the special status accorded the North West and South West regions, and the general code on decentralization.

In the course of trying to resolve the crisis, Paul Biya pays allegiance to international bodies like the United Nations, Commonwealth and African Union for their immense contribution towards peace in Cameroon.

In the economic domain, the president sounded optimistic that the economy of Cameroon is doing well despite threats in the sub region. He however condemns those who think Cameroon as a single nation can solve problems that affect the international community as a whole.
