The president of the national commission for the promotion of human rights and freedoms has called on Yaounde administration to decongest prisons in Cameroon as the country battle with coronavirus.

Dr. Chemuta Divine Banda in a press conference in Yaounde Tuesday April 14 said ” I have called on the government to release some prisoners and avoid a disaster of registering a covid 19 patient in any of the prisons.”

The president of the national commission for the promotion of human rights and freedoms says the body has written to all the key ministries in Cameroon to ensure the respect of human rights in the process of fighting against coronavirus.

Cameroon’s coronavirus cases are over 800 already, posing a threat to inmates in detention facilities many of which are noted for overcrowding and other poor living conditions.
