Pro-Biya writer, Calixthe Beyala, launches attack on Biya regime

Cameroonian-born French writer, Calixthe Beyala, once a fervent supporter of Paul Biya, has publicly launched series of public and social media attacks against the regime.

In a recent interview, Beyala described Biya’s regime as egocentric and self-centered. She said, “They have an unending hunger… They leave nothing for others. Can you imagine, for example, one of them can have three hundred houses in the country for just himself?”

The writer went ahead to emphasize that the actions of the regime are gradually crushing down the hopes of the youths in the country. “We can no longer tell the youths you can work and succeed. No! Today, instead of intellectuals we have influencers who are mistresses to these same men and for that reason, it has become the only focus of our youths,” she added.

She also questioned the much trumpeted presidential aspirations of Frank Biya and maintained that he “is unfit to be rule Cameroon.”

Ironically, Beyala is one of those who maintained that Biya was democratically elected when the opposition was crying foul.

Beyala has also been one of those fighting against freedom of expression and press with actions such orchestrated the arrest of Paul Chouta, the journalist and whistleblower.

On May 28, 2019, five police officers arrested Chouta in response to the complaint by Beyala in Yaounde, Center Region of Cameroon.

Her sudden reaction has left many to wonder about the real motivation behind the turnaround that has seen her going publicly against the Biya regime.
