PWD of Bamenda sacks coach after losing Cameroon Cup finals

PWD football club of Bamenda has sacked its head coach, Bep Constantin, as well as the goalkeeper trainer, Liye Zogo Pascal Bienvenue, after the team failed to win the Cameroon Cup finals on Sunday.

The club’s president, Pascal Abunde, announced it will not renew their contracts as the team prepares for the 2023–2024 football season.

Coach Bep has led PWD through 13 games, won eight, drew three, and lost two. He joined the club midway through last season, and his deal with the club was to run till the end of the season.

Meanwhile, the goalkeeper trainer, Pascal Zogo, has been with the team since the start of the 2022–2023 football season.

The PWD management felt disappointed after the Abakwa Boys lost 2-0 to Fovu de Baham at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium, a defeat Mr. Abunde described as “a bitter pill to swallow”.

In a release, he apologised to fans and supporters of the club for the club’s failure to win the Cameroon Cup. The team engaged in early preparations, galvanised a huge number of fans, and transported them to Yaounde for the finals. But things did not turn out as planned.

Days after the encounter, the club received a package of FCFA 50 million from elites of the North West to support them in the Cameroon Cup.

A victory would have offered PWD its second Cameroon Cup trophy after winning last year for the first time.

The club’s management said their defeat by Fovu was a learning process, as the lessons learned will be corrected ahead of the new football season.

PWD finished last football season among the best-performing teams in the Cameroon first division, emerging as runners-up out of 128 clubs.

The team is now preparing to rise above the challenges of the last season as the 2023–2024 football season begins.
