Reactions Galore As Kamto Declares Himself Winner Of Sunday’s Polls

The decision of Professor Maurice Kamto to declare himself winner of the October 7 presidential election in Cameroon has triggered reactions from political actors in Cameroon.
Below are the reactions:

Fon Chafah XI of Bangolan and Secretary General of National Association of Traditional Rulers says Cameroon is not ready for bloodshed. “We need the country to remain peaceful as it was before election…,” Fon Chaffah said, adding that similar declarations were made in Gabon and and Kenya but yielded no fruit. “I call for calm and restrain..his claims are baseless..”

El Hadj Lawan, Chairman of the UDP who backed the CPDM candidate Paul Biya has said it is a political mistake; an abuse to democracy.
El Hadj Lawan called on prof Maurice Kamto to withdraw his statement and stop dragging the country’s democracy behind.
“If you see someone dancing on the road, be rest assured, drummers are in the bush…,” he said.

SDF Littoral Regional has a contrary take compared to the party’s presidential candidate, Joshua Osih.
Hon Jean Michel Nintcheu says they are waiting for Kamto’s party, the MRC to present results of the Grand North, Centre, South & East, and if he is winner, they will descend with him to the streets to claim victory for the opposition coalition. He says when there is cheating in a match and all the rules are flouted, the spectators have a right to invade the stadium.

Honorable Bapooh Lipot, UPC Secretary General says Kamto’s declaration doesn’t speak well of a presidential candidate. “The UPC is against this…we have institutions to proclaim election results….we condemn the fact that Kamto called for strike..” he declared.

Joshua Osih, presidential candidate of the SDF has urged for the respect of rule of law and said ongoing agitation should not jeopardise social cohesion. He called on party members not to propagate such information and wait for final results.

A similar message was delivered by Cabral Libii of UNIVERS party and Serge Espoire Matomba of PURS. They told voters to wait for the results, and that if the decision of the Constitutional Council differs from what obtained in polling stations, they will rise to fight for their right.

Garga Haman Adji, presidential candidate of the ADD described Prof Maurice Kamto as excited and inexperienced.
“If becoming President was that cheap…we would have had over 20 republics…I have been in this race since the 90s…someone comes in today and says he is President..” Garga Haman Adji said. He called on professor Maurice Kamto to do things legally.

But Jean Mark Bokoko in an outing today said section 113 of the Electoral code which says results should be proclaimed after vote count was not respected.

The president of Dynamic Citoyen said the reaction of Professor Maurice Kamto is politically right.
