Relative Calm Returns to Nkwen After Attack, Shooting Of Gendarme

By Soulemanu Buba

Activities have regained steem at the mile 2 neighborhood precisely around Ntahbesse Junction in Bamenda, North West Region. Earlier today, there was chaos in the areas as a gendarme was attacked at a check point and his gun taken away.

Sources say the attackers whose identities could not be confirmed, disarmed the soldier before shooting him in the arm.

His colleagues at Newroad junction took to their heels when they heard the gunshots and saw people running for their lives.

They only resuffaced after the chaos had died down and people were beginning to return to their regular activities again.

“They (assailants) addressed him as a French extortionist before opening fire on him. I saw how they bundled him before collecting his weapon,” a biker who said he witnessed the incident told MMI.

MMI could not immediately confirm what the biker said. However, there have been numerous complaints from transporters, of extortion by the gendarmes around that area and other checkpoints in the town of Bamenda.

The wounded Gendarme official meanwhile, was rushed to a health facility for medical attention. His present health condition has not been made known as of the time of this report.

The victim of the attack is one of many members of the state armed forces injured as the armed conflict in the Anglophone regions ensues. Many others have been killed too, some in guerilla style attacks and others in confrontation with non state armed factions.
