Mr. Ndah Oliver was denied medical treatment in detention
A 72-year-old retired civil servant, Ndah Oliver, has died following a harrowing two-month ordeal involving threats, detention without charge, and alleged medical neglect. His death on March 22nd has left his family devastated and seeking justice.
The ordeal began on January 15th when Mr. Ndah received a threatening phone call from an individual residing in Douala. Concerned for his safety, he filed a complaint in Wum, hoping for legal protection. On January 22nd, authorities detained him without charge instead of providing assistance. His lawyer repeatedly applied for bail, but authorities denied the requests. Instead of being released, Mr Ndah faced transfer to Bamenda, where military tribunal proceedings awaited him. They accused him of involvement with separatist groups and theft, but his family vehemently refutes these allegations.
Medical examinations soon revealed his deteriorating health, prompting doctors to recommend urgent hospitalisation. Further bail requests, even with supporting medical records, faced dismissal. As his condition worsened, authorities made the controversial decision to transfer him back to Wum on March 20th, disregarding medical advice. Upon arrival, his health further declined, revealing liver failure. A delayed “sick bail” was granted, but it came too late—Mr. Ndah succumbed to his illness while being transported to the regional hospital on March 22nd, exactly two months after his detention.
His family believes his arrest and prolonged detention were part of a broader scheme to frame him, stemming from an ongoing farmer-grazier dispute. They argue that certain individuals manipulated the conflict to target Mr. Ndah, a retired stores accountant with over 34 years of service. Now, the family faces additional legal battles to retrieve his body for burial, compounding their grief and frustration.
The family of Mr. Ndah Oliver is demanding a thorough inquiry and legal action against those responsible for his unjust treatment. Human rights advocates have also voiced concerns over the handling of his case, urging authorities to address systemic issues in the country’s detention and judicial processes.
As his loved ones mourn, they remain determined to fight for the truth and ensure that no other family endures a similar ordeal.
