Rigobert Song Bahanag Expresses Gratitude and Optimism for the Future

Former Cameroonian head coach Rigobert Song Bahanag released a statement on Friday, March 1st, 2024, following his departure from the position.

“Dear Sisters and Brothers; Dear Supporters of the Indomitable Lions,” Song began, acknowledging both Cameroonian citizens and the national team’s passionate fans. He expressed his honour in serving as the team’s manager for the past two years, highlighting his dedication to fulfilling his “exhilarating and delicate mission.”

Song emphasised his commitment to national duty, stating that he “devoted himself” to achieving the assigned objectives, which included qualifying for both the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. However, he acknowledged the team’s shortcomings, stating, “Sport being what it is, our performances during these competitions were not commensurate with the notoriety and prestige of Cameroonian football.”

Taking responsibility for the results, Song also reflected on the positive aspects of his experience, expressing his appreciation for the time spent with the team and the personal growth he gained. He extended his gratitude to various entities who supported him during his tenure, including the government, players, staff, and the Cameroon Football Federation.

Finally, Song addressed the passionate fanbase, thanking them for their unwavering support. He acknowledged their desire to see the Indomitable Lions “reign in continental football,” and expressed his belief that achieving such a goal remains possible.

Song’s departure comes after Cameroon’s exit in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations that was hosted in Ivory Coast, owing to a defeat by the Super Eagles of Nigeria. The Cameroon Football Federation has yet to announce a replacement.

Many coaches have resigned following their dismal performances in the last edition of the AFCON, from which hosts Ivory Coast emerged as champions.
