The invitation to the inauguration ceremony came from Song’s close friend, Makan Magassou, a prominent Malian businessman and sports enthusiast.
Indomitable Lions coach and Cameroonian football legend, Rigobert Song Bahanag, was honoured this weekend when a newly constructed sports complex in Bamako, Mali, named one of its fields after him.
Magassou, who played a key role in the development of the complex, felt strongly about immortalising Song’s contributions to the sport in this way.
“Rigobert is not just a friend,” Magassou declared during his speech at the ceremony.
“He is a symbol of African footballing excellence, a man who has inspired generations with his dedication, skill, and leadership. Having his name grace this field is a way for us to show our appreciation and ensure his legacy continues to inspire young athletes.”
Visibly moved by the gesture, Song expressed his gratitude to Magassou and the Malian people.
“Very honored to have been invited to Bamako in Mali by my brother and friend Makan Magassouba for the inauguration of the Malian leisure centre (Football), Foot loisirs SARL, one of whose stadia bears my name. Thank you for this honour.”
The newly inaugurated “Espace Rigobert Song” complex boasts a state-of-the-art football pitch, along with facilities for basketball, handball, and volleyball.
It is hoped that the complex will serve as a breeding ground for sporting talent in Mali and beyond.
Song’s name being etched onto this sporting haven adds another layer to his already illustrious career.
As a player, he captained the Indomitable Lions to four Africa Cup of Nations titles and a historic Olympic gold medal in 2000.
He later transitioned into coaching, guiding Cameroon to the 2022 Qatar World Cup and leaving a lasting mark on the national team.
The naming of the field in his honour is a testament not only to his sporting achievements but also to his character and sportsmanship.
Song is widely admired for his humility, discipline, and unwavering commitment to excellence, both on and off the field.
As young Malian footballers take their first steps onto the “Espace Rigobert Song,” they will be reminded not just of a footballing legend, but also of a man who embodies the true spirit of sportsmanship and inspires generations to dream big and reach for the stars.
