Security Forces Escalate Ghost Town Operations In Bamenda

By Soulemanu Buba

Moving from one part of the town of Bamenda to the other today could only be compared to a Camel passing through the eye of a needle.

Tuesday July 26 2022 was hit by what many have described as a controversial ghost town because while some quarters said there was going to be a lockdown, an audio from Chris Anu debunked the information calling on the population to go about that daily activities.

This was not the case as economic activities were grounded. People stayed at home for fear of the unknown.

Many who left their homes this Wednesday July 27 were forced to return when the bikes that were transporting them were intercepted by security forces.

According to Ndze, a trader in Bamenda, he was on his way to the Bamenda food market when the bike he boarded was intercepted at Ngeng Junction and the rider forced to sit on the ground: “I was forced to return home when our bike was stopped from moving further by security forces. The rider was asked to pay 35,000FCFA but he said he had just 2,000FCFA,” he testified.

He added: “I was forced at gun point to leave the place, I don’t even know what later happened to him. Many others who saw what was happening from a distance made a U-turn and in less than no time, the number of bikes on the streets reduced drastically,” he said.

Even those moving on foot have also been recounting what they went through in the hands of security forces.

“I was forced at gun point to return home at T-junction by government forces. l live at Meta Quarters and was on foot. I can’t say why they ask me to go back,” Standly told MMI.

We have also gathered from areas like Ntarikon, Travellers, Hospital Roundabout among others, that many were forced to return to their homes by security forces.

Many are now hoping that tomorrow will be different given that rumors are also circulating that the lock down operation continues tomorrow.
