Senate President Resurfaces for Bureau Elections After Year-long Absence

Senate President Marcel Niat Njifenji was spotted at today’s opening of the March ordinary session of Parliament, which will see the election of the new bureau.

This is the first time Niat has been seen in public since May 20, 2024.

During last year’s March session of the Senate, deliberations were paused because Niat was allegedly on a sick bed.

He later appeared and was reelected president of the upper house.

This Tuesday’s session was chaired by the oldest senator in Cameroon, Rene Ze Nguele, as tradition demands.

The appearance of Marcel Niat Njifenji indicates that he would like to be reelected.

The 90-year-old has been consecutively elected as president since the inception of the Senate in 2013.

The President of the Senate is the constitutional successor of Cameroon’s Head of State. But this can only happen in cases of resignation, death, or incapacitation.

He is among 30 senators appointed by President Paul Biya. The constitution gives the president the authority to appoint 30 out of 100 Senators.
