Ambazonia Separatist Fighters Publicly Execute Man in Muea

On the morning of Tuesday, July 8, 2025, Ambazonia separatist fighters publicly executed a man in Muea, a village in Buea Subdivision, Fako Division, located in Cameroon’s restive South West Region. The incident occurred as residents were starting their daily activities, intensifying fears in the community.

According to sources, the victim was brought from nearby Wonyia Mokumba village and killed at former Chief Street in Muea. Witnesses say the man pleaded for his life but was accused of being a “black leg.” This is a label separatist fighters use to describe those they believe oppose their independence movement.

The attack also left a passerby injured by gunfire; the victim is reportedly receiving medical treatment at a local health facility.

Details of the Incident

The assailants reportedly used motorcycles to travel to Muea with their captive. The execution was carried out publicly in front of terrified onlookers. The victim’s body was later taken by relatives back to Wonyia Mokumba village for burial rites.

This violent episode is the latest in a series of attacks by separatists in the area. Just last week, fighters killed one civilian, injured others, and set fire to four cars in the Mile 16 neighbourhood of Buea.

The recent surge in violence has alarmed residents, especially as Cameroon prepares for important elections in the coming months. Many fear that insecurity could further destabilise the region.

Context of the Crisis

The ongoing conflict in the North West and South West Regions has claimed over 10,000 lives and displaced hundreds of thousands more. The crisis has also destroyed property and severely disrupted the social and economic life of these two regions.

The recent execution in Muea reflects the fragile security situation. It further points to the need for urgent peace efforts to protect civilians in Cameroon’s troubled South West Region.
