Seven Dead in Tragic Car Crash at Besongabang

At least seven people have been confirmed dead, and several others severely injured following a collision between two vehicles at Besongabang village, in Mamfe Central Subdivision, Thursday, October 10, 2024.

The tragic event has left the entire community in mourning and raised concerns about road safety in the region.

The accident occurred when a Hilux vehicle transporting a corpse from the Mamfe mortuary to Nfuni village collided with a Carina coming from Ekok.

The Hilux was en-route for a traditional burial when it veered off course, resulting in a head-on collision with the Carina, which was carrying passengers along the same stretch of road.

The impact of the crash was so severe that it led to the immediate death of seven individuals at the scene, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries, some critically.

Scene of Chaos and Desperation

Eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with both vehicles severely mangled from the collision.

“It was terrifying. We heard a loud crash and rushed to the scene only to be met with bodies lying on the ground. The Hilux was unrecognizable, and the Carina was crushed,” said a local resident who rushed to the accident site to assist.

Emergency services were quick to respond, but it was a race against time.

The wounded were hurriedly taken to nearby medical facilities in Mamfe, where they are receiving treatment.

However, due to the severity of the injuries, some of the survivors remain in critical condition, and medical personnel are working around the clock to stabilize them.

Investigations Underway

Local authorities have begun investigating the cause of the accident, although initial reports suggest that both vehicles may have been speeding, and the road conditions in the area might have contributed to the tragedy.

The stretch of road where the accident occurred is known for its sharp bends and poor visibility, especially during the rainy season.

However, no official statement has been released confirming these speculations.

Mamfe authorities, led by the Divisional Officer, have expressed their condolences to the bereaved families and vowed to get to the root cause of the incident.

“This is a terrible tragedy, and our hearts go out to the families of those who lost their lives. We are committed to ensuring a thorough investigation and taking steps to prevent such incidents in the future,” the Divisional Officer said in a brief statement.

Community in Mourning

The Besongabang and surrounding communities are in shock following the accident. The victims of the crash include a mixture of locals and travellers, all with families who are now grappling with the sudden loss of their loved ones.

Funerals are expected to take place once the bodies are released to the families after the necessary autopsies and investigations are concluded.

Road Safety Concerns

This latest incident has reignited the debate on road safety, not just in Mamfe but across Cameroon.

Poor road infrastructure, reckless driving, lack of enforcement of traffic laws, and speeding are common causes of accidents in the country, leading to frequent fatalities.
