Several Anglophone detainees in Kondengui still ‘missing’

The whereabouts of several Anglophone detainees in the Kondengui Yaounde prison has remained unknown following the July 22, 2019 protests which led to a fire disaster within the detention facility.

According to reports, several proponents of the protest including coffin revolutionist, Mancho Bibixy, Tsi Conrad, Ngalim and scores of Anglophone inmates were transferred to an unknown destination.

“This might be the last time I’m writing to you, our brothers are being taken out of prison. Let the world know that,” one of the inmates told Mimi Mefo Info hours after the inferno in Kondengui which destroyed at least five office structures according to government sources.

Meantime, Ambazonian leaders in different outings have urged the Biya regime to reveal the whereabouts of the inmates to the national and International community or face their ‘wrath’.

The Dr Sako –led Ambazonia faction for their part, have given Yaounde five days to show proof of life of the Ambazonia detainees taken out of Kondengui to other detention facilities, without which, “an indefinite lockdown in NW/ SW will take place”.
In two separate documents signed by Dabney Yerima and Ayaba Cho Lucas, a two day lockdown between Monday and Tuesday has been announced.

Human Right Watch also worried about the situation.

The Senior Researcher at Human Rights Watch, HRW in charge of Central Africa, Ilaria Allegrozzi said in a tweet: “In Cameroon where authorities think if you are a detainee your rights can be taken away. Time to say NO to secret detention. NO to torture. YES to access to lawyers, doctors and relatives. YES to effective legal process and adequate detention conditions,”.

The transfer of some MRC militants and web journalist, Paul Chouta has meanwhile led to outrage on social media.
Yaounde authorities as at press time were yet to react to the situation which has been raising tension.
In the meantime families of the concerned individuals are worried.
“We have heard about the situation of Mancho, we are very worried, we cannot get to him or visit him, we do not even know what is going on,” a relative said.
