Soldiers accused of extra- judicial killings as corpses found in rivers in Bamenda, Bali

Residents of Bamenda in the North West region of Cameroon have been taken aback following the discovery of a corpse in river Mezam.

Sources say the victim, a young man was found with a bullet in his head.

“Family says he was taken be the military yesterday evening in Nkwen and today he was found dead in the water with a bullet in his head” our source narrates.

While many remain upset about the incident, what makes it worse is that it is not just another random killing.

Observers have identified what seems to be a pattern of murdering and dumping the bodies of young men in rivers in the Anglophone regions.

In Bali, a town close to Bamenda, locals met with a far worse scene. Several persons killed and dumped in a river.

A source says he witnessed the killings in the locality of Nahka. “Three weeks ago I personally was in Nahka and we found the dead Body of three men laying on the Nahka bridge. At around 2AM a military car drove by, took out eight persons from their wagon and killed them. They threw some in the River and the other 4 are still lying under the bridge, the is a heavy amount of blood everywhere…”

He adds that “… viewing the degree of blood on the bridge it confirms what witnesses said about hearing over 30 gunshots…”

“I went to Naka bridge by 5PM on Sunday.
I saw 4 corpses all male close to the river…
But neighbors claim the corpses were more than 4 in the morning fearing some had submerged into Nahka river.”

No press organ nor authority he adds, has cared to find out the origin of their deaths. With a new check point mounted at Nsongwa, mile 90, he says it makes it difficult for non locals to visit the scene.

Locals remain in fear as no one knows who’s next.

For close to four years today, soldiers have been combatting separatist fighters in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon.

Civilians have been the biggest casualties, with many being jailed and others killed without trial.
