Soldiers Accused Of killing 48-Year-Old Man In Kumba

Soldiers on a campaign against separatist fighters have been accused of being responsible for the death of a 48-year-old man, Mbotaoko Godfred Essono in Kumba, Meme division of the crisis-hit South West region.

Relatives of Essono are accusing soldiers of having sniffed life out of the man.

He is alleged to have been killed Sunday. It is believed by Godfred’s relatives that he was shot dead by soldiers who may have mistaken him for a separatist fighter in Kumba.

At the time of the supposed tragedy, his relatives told MMI that Essono had gone out with his bike to buy a bag of flour which his wife uses to bake stuffs for sale.

On his way back, he is believed to have encountered a convoy of Military returning from an operation around Mile 19.

“A bullet was fired and witnesses say he was shot, we saw blood on the spot, but we couldn’t find his body. We want to know where he was taken to, dead or alive, we are worried,” a relative told Mimi Mefo Info.

Essono is reported to have begged and tried to convince the soldiers in vain that he was a civilian, and not a separatist.

He was taken alongside his bike and the bag of flour he was carrying into the military vehicle, and has not been seen or heard from since then.

Though his death has not been confirmed, the his family remains disturbed that he might have been killed.
