Soldiers Survive IED Blast On National Day in North West

On May 20th, soldiers narrowly escaped injury after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonated near the Tobin Gendarmerie brigade in Kumbo, a town in the conflict-affected North West region of Cameroon. The device exploded just as soldiers approached the gendarmerie premises.

The Cameroon News Agency (CNA) reports that the bomb, believed to have been planted by separatist elements, was triggered as soldiers of the Rapid Intervention Battalion (BIR) moved to intervene at the site.

Claim of Responsibility

A separatist group calling itself the “Bui Warriors” has claimed responsibility for the explosion. A video allegedly linked to the group surfaced online, purportedly showing their intention to carry out the detonation. The video appears to outline their plan to target security personnel stationed at the brigade.

Details of the Incident

According to CNA sources, the gendarmes stationed at Tobin alerted the BIR about a separatist flag that had been raised inside the brigade. The soldiers were deployed to remove the flag when the IED went off.

Despite the close proximity of the blast, no fatalities were reported. CNA confirmed that one individual sustained minor effects due to the shockwave, but no critical injuries occurred.

Ongoing Conflict

Kumbo is located in the Bui Division, one of the epicenters of Cameroon’s Anglophone crisis, a conflict that began in 2016. Armed separatist groups have been seeking independence for the North West and South West regions, leading to frequent clashes with state forces, destruction of infrastructure, and instability in the affected areas.

IEDs have increasingly become a tactic used by armed groups in the region to target security forces. The use of such devices raises further concerns about the evolving methods of attack and the risks posed to both military personnel and civilians.

Conclusion

The incident highlights the persistent security challenges in the North West region, particularly in conflict zones like Kumbo. While the recent attack did not result in loss of life, it underscores the need for continued vigilance and comprehensive conflict resolution efforts to address the root causes of the ongoing unrest.
