The South West Regional Assembly has launched the construction of its new ultramodern headquarters in Buea, an edifice which is said to be one of the most iconic buildings in the region, upon its completion.
The complex is being built on a two-hectare piece of land and will cost close to 8 billion francs CFA, funded by the Special Council Support Fund for Mutual Assistance, FEICOM.
The project is expected to be completed by 2023.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, the President of the South West Regional Assembly, Zacheus Bakoma Elango, said the edifice will become one of the most iconic structures in the region upon once completed.
“It is a very huge project. It is a project that will cost close to 8 billion, funded by FEICOM at the instructions of government and the project is expected to last between six and seven years,” Mr Elango said.
“The project is a complex which will have 11 buildings in all and I want to say that project will be the most magnificent architectural masterpiece which would have been constructed in the South West region in recent times,” he added.
Chariot Company Ltd has been retained for the project, which is expected to be completed in 2032. A representative of the company pledged strict quality control, safety compliance, and adherence to the project timeline.
On February 24, traditional rulers in Buea performed libations to mark the official launch of the construction, seeking blessings for the successful realisation of the project.
The South West Regional Assembly was established in 2020 as part of government measures to deepen decentralisation and address the armed conflict in Cameroon’s English-speaking regions. The Assembly is composed of 90 members, split in two houses—the House of Chiefs and the House of Divisional Representatives.
Its second elections were held in November last year, and the new executive body was installed in January this year, with Zacheus Bakoma Elango as President and Chief Kombe Richard Ndike as Vice President.
