The campaign was launched yesterday in Buea during which it was revealed the region’s Coronavirus cases have dropped drastically to about 31.
“The epidemiology curve is taking a downward trend but it’s not as though COVID-19 has left us,” said health delegate Dr Zachs Ebongo Nanje.
The region has confirmed 810 cases since COVID-19 outbreak, with 742 recoveries and 37 deaths, according to Dr. Ebongo.
“We have noticed that for the past three months and one week, we have not had any tests and we are having on the average 10 positive cases per week as opposed to 140 in June,” he told the press.
The Southwest is joining other nine regions of the nation in a Zero Prevalence Survey of COVID-19 Advocacy Plan, aimed at detecting prevalence rate among children and adults, and will run from October to December 2020.
“It’s a sensitisation project and we want to let the population see that we are interested to see within our population and within the various sub groups of our population whether they are harbouring the virus or not… In the days ahead, our teams will be going to the field to take specimens voluntarily from persons following all ethical and medical norms,” said Dr Ebongo.
Chairing a meeting to kick-start the campaign, the Chief of Service for the economy, cultural and social affairs at the Southwest Governor’s Office, Theophile Ndumbe, said people should know their Coronavirus status and should respect preventive measures.
