Student killed in Oliti-Yive inter-intercommunity violence

A student whose name we got as Akundunga Blasius, has reportedly been killed in a village known as Yive, in Akwaya subdivision, Manyu division of the South West region.

According to sources, the deceased who is a native of Oliti, was reportedly killed in the neighbouring Yive village on July 5, 2022.

The victim was a student of the University of Calabar, UNICAL in Nigeria and had decided to return to school when he met his demise.

“This is an Oliti boy killed in Yive,” a local with knowledge of the incident has told MMI.

He had reportedly returned home following a strike action in Nigeria and had decided to return to resume school.

“He was a student of UNICAL. There was a strike in Nigeria and he had to come home”, the local said, adding that, “On his way back, he was abducted in Yive and his whereabouts not known for two days”

The source, furthered that, “It was yesterday July 5th that the Yive people confirmed to Oliti that they had killed Blasius”.

Tension is reportedly rising between the two localities given that in recent days Oliti has lost two souls in the hands Yive.

“There is no issue at the moment between Oliti and Yive. The people of Yive are only taking advantage of the fact that Oliti is at war with Balin, to avenge the defeat they suffered in a 2008 war with Oliti,” our source revealed.

The Oliti people are yet to react.
An Oliti villager has confided in MMI that it is not going to be easy when Oliti reacts to the unprovoked actions of their neighbour.

This incident has occurred at a time when the Oliti have been engaged in an inter-village violence with the people of Balin, another village in Akwaya subdivision.

The most recent violence between the Oliti and Balin reportedly claimed over 30 lives with untold destruction of property.
