Student Protest Disrupts First Day of School in Moutouroua

By Kate Bih

The much-anticipated school resumption campaign has been shaken by a student protest at Lycée de Moutouroua, in the Far North Region, sparking tensions on the first day of the academic year.

The demonstration, which took place on September 9, 2024, saw students and parents united in their demand for the immediate removal of the school’s principal.

The protest began early in the morning, with students holding placards and chanting slogans accusing the principal of mismanagement and failing to address long-standing grievances.

Parents soon joined the movement, intensifying the protest.

According to the demonstrators, their demands include addressing concerns relating to their dissatisfaction with the leadership style of the principal, whom they accuse of negligence and authoritarianism.

The situation escalated quickly, prompting the arrival of local authorities, including the Senior Divisional Officer of Mayo Kani Division, who arrived at the scene in an attempt to calm the situation.

As of now, there has been no official response from the principal or the education authorities.

However, the SDO has urged both parties to engage in peaceful discussions, assuring the protesters that their concerns will be addressed.
