Technical Education on the Rise: 6,377 Students Choose Tech Schools in South West

In the South West region, 6,377 candidates who sat for the common entrance exams have chosen to continue their education at technical secondary schools. Among those who took the exams, 5,934 passed in List A, while only 443 passed in List B.

According to statistics broken down by MMI, 4,581 students expressed interest in continuing their education in the Fako Division. In contrast, the numbers are significantly lower in other divisions. Kupe Maunenguba saw only 151 students opting to study there, and in the Manyu Division, a mere two students wish to remain in the division. Nineteen students indicated they would attend school in Lebialem, and 1,407 showed interest in schooling in the Meme Division. Only 16 students plan to continue their secondary education outside the division in terms of technical education.

The majority of students have shown a preference for Government Technical High School, Molyko, with 1,780 expressing interest, of whom 1,553 passed in List A. The second most popular choice is GTHS Ombe, with 763 interested students, followed by GTHS Tiko with 757, and GTHS Limbe with 724 students showing interest.

The interest in technical education in the Southwest is considerably higher compared to those opting for general secondary education. In the Buea subdivision alone, 3,560 students want to attend general secondary schools.

The Southwest Regional Delegation of Basic Education reported an increase in the pass percentage of 3.2% for general education and over 1.5% for technical education. The exams were conducted just a month ago, and students are now preparing for the First School Leaving Certificate exams, scheduled for June 4 and 5.
