Technology: Google to Delete Inactive Gmail Accounts from December 2023

By Washira Helene

The internet giant – Google has announced that it will be deleting inactive Gmail accounts starting December 2023. According to the decision, this will concern Gmail accounts whose owners have not logged in for the past two years.

The decision details that emails, contacts, and other data related to these accounts will be deleted.

Google has given a few conditions that owners of inactive accounts can meet to prevent them from being deleted. First, owners must log into their accounts at least once every two years. Secondly, one can also keep the account active by making a purchase from the Google Play Store, subscribing to a Google service, or adding a credit card to the account.

Owners of inactive Gmail accounts have been encouraged to log into them as soon as possible.

Sending and receiving emails, adding contacts, and using other Google services can be other steps to take to keep the account active.

Google says the deleting of inactive accounts is to ensure users’ security. According to technology experts, Inactive accounts are more vulnerable to hacking and other security threats and by deleting these accounts, Google is helping to keep its users’ data safe.

Users with questions about Google’s inactive account policy have been invited to visit the Google Help Center.
