CNN Founder Ted Turner Dies at 87

By Marie N Carnu

Ted Turner, the pioneering media mogul who founded CNN, the world’s first 24-hour television news network, has died at the age of 87.

According to reports, Turner died peacefully on April 6, 2026, at his residence in Florida surrounded by family members. His death was later confirmed by both CNN and members of his family.

Reports indicate that Turner had been battling several health challenges in recent years. In 2018, he publicly revealed that he had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a progressive neurological disorder that affects movement, memory, thinking, and behavior.

His condition reportedly worsened over time, leading to a visible decline in his health.

Earlier in 2025, media outlets reported that Turner had been hospitalized after suffering from pneumonia.

Though he later recovered at a rehabilitation center, concerns about his health continued to grow. While the official cause of death has not yet been publicly disclosed, several reports have linked his passing to complications related to age and his long-standing dementia diagnosis.

Born Robert Edward Turner III on November 19, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ted Turner became one of the most influential figures in global media history.

He transformed his father’s billboard advertising business into a vast media empire and revolutionized television broadcasting with the launch of CNN in 1980.

At a time when many doubted viewers would watch news around the clock, Turner proved critics wrong by creating a network that changed the way the world consumed breaking news.

Under his leadership, CNN gained global prominence through its live coverage of major international events, including wars, elections, political crises, and humanitarian disasters.

The network became particularly recognized for its real-time reporting during the 1991 Gulf War, which cemented CNN’s reputation as a leading global news outlet.

Beyond CNN, Turner also founded other influential media channels including TBS and Turner Classic Movies. He was widely known for his bold personality, innovative ideas, and willingness to challenge traditional broadcasting models.

Outside the media industry, Turner was equally recognized for his philanthropic efforts and environmental activism. He donated billions of dollars to humanitarian causes and supported initiatives related to environmental protection, nuclear disarmament, and global peace.

In 1997, he made headlines worldwide after pledging one billion dollars to support the United Nations, one of the largest charitable donations ever made at the time.

Tributes have continued to pour in from journalists, political leaders, celebrities, and media organizations across the world, many describing Turner as a visionary who permanently transformed modern journalism and television news.

His legacy remains deeply connected to the rise of 24-hour news broadcasting and the globalization of media coverage. Even decades after founding CNN, many still regards Ted Turner as one of the architects of modern television journalism.
