Thirty three years after Lake Nyos disaster in the North West region of Cameroon

Today marks thirty three years after Lake Nyos disaster in the North West region of Cameroon. The emission of toxic gas from the Lake from the night of August 21st 1986 caused the death of 1.746 people and over 3.500 livestock according to official reports.

Survivors of what is considered one of the worst disasters Cameroon has experienced say strangers have been occupying their land for farming.

Degassing systems have since been installed at the lake by the government of Cameroon, with the aim of reducing the concentration of carbodioxide in the waters and therefore reduce the risk of further eruptions.
