Tibor Nagy cast doubts on ECOWAS’ military ability to intervene in Niger

The Former Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs of the United States, Tibor Nagy, has greatly downplayed the ability of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to intervene militarily in the crisis in Niger.

ECOWAS leaders have pondered a possible military intervention in Niger following a coup that ousted President Ahmed Bazoum. The bloc, which is currently under the leadership of Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has told the military junta to cede power or face intervention.

Burkina Faso and Mali responded to these threats by telling ECOWAS they were prepared to back Niger in case of any attack from the bloc.

Secretary Tibor Nagy, however, has made light of threats from ECOWAS, as to him, they do not have the military capabilities to attack Niger. “My thinking is that ECOWAS is incapable of military intervention and will find some face-saving measure to kick the can down the road,” he stated on platform X, in response to a BBC article.

The ECOWAS leaders met for a three-day deliberation meeting in Abuja, Nigeria, and issued a 1-week ultimatum to the coup plotters to relinquish power back to President Bazoum.
