Tottenham 2-1 Brighton: late winner boosts Spurs’ quest for Champions League spot

Tottenham boosted their chances of finishing in the top four with a controversial win over Brighton, thanks to a late winner from Harry Kane. Brighton were far superior, having two goals ruled out and a clear penalty denied by VAR before Kane won it. Spurs had to rely on luck, but the win keeps them within three points of the Champions League places.

Tottenham won a tense match against Brighton to secure a crucial three points in their push for Champions League qualification. Son scored a fantastic goal from the edge of the box, with Lloris making two incredible saves to deny Mac Allister and Caicedo before being beaten by Dunk. March’s curling corner from the right was met by the centre-back, who powered in a close-range header.

When Welbeck’s strike came off Mac Allister and into the net, the Seagulls thought they had completed the comeback, but the ball hit the World Cup winner’s arm on the way through. Both managers then saw red as a game-changing moment approached.

Mitoma was denied a penalty after being tripped by Hojbjerg, despite the fact that the Denmank international played a key role in the game-winning goal. Son found him down the right, and the midfielder cut it back to Kane, who deflected his shot past Steele.

Tottenham have won five consecutive Premier League games at home, after winning just one and losing four of the previous five.

Brighton’s first defeat in eight Premier League away games (W4 D3) since a 1-3 loss to Manchester City in October.

Tottenham has won the Premier League double over Brighton for the second time (2-1 at home, 1-0 away), also in 2018-19.
