Tragic Highway Accident Kills Two Teachers

The unfortunate loss of two teachers from the CES de PAN-Makak in a tragic highway accident on the Yaoundé-Douala highway has left the educational community in Cameroon is in grief. Teachers of Physics, Chemistry, and Technology (PCT) Madame Mayoudom Djohou Auriane Sonya and Life and Earth Sciences (SVT) Monsieur Ayissi Bella Norbert Hervé perished while travelling back from their respective classrooms.

According to reports, two heavy-duty vehicles collided in an accident that happened today, February 15, 2024, along the Yaounde-Douala highway. The reason for the collision and its specifics are still being looked into.

Both Madame Sonya and Monsieur Hervé were praised for being devoted and passionate teachers who cared passionately about their students’ education and well-being. Their untimely demise has created a vacuum in the hearts of their coworkers, students, and families, in addition to the classrooms at CES de Pan-Makak.

“We are deeply saddened by this news for our school community,” expressed a Chemistry student, clearly distraught. A colleague of the deceased teachers also echoed similar sentiments.

“Madame Sonya and Monsieur Hervé were mentors, friends, and confidantes to their students, not just educators. Their loss will be felt greatly,” she told MMI over the phone.

Students, parents, and other educators have paid tribute to Madame Sonya and Monsieur Hervé, praising their kindness, sense of humour, and commitment to their work. Numerous people related tales of their life-improving impact as teachers and the great effects they had on their students.

The Yaoundé-Douala route is notorious for its high accident rate, with many fatalities recorded this year alone. The causes of the accidents range from bad roads to overspeeding and poor overtaking maneuvers.

The perils that commuters in Cameroon endure on the country’s highways are brought home sharply by this tragedy. It is a request that all drivers exercise increased caution and implement better traffic safety protocols. Meanwhile, the community of CES de PAN-Makak laments the passing of two cherished educators and finds comfort in recollections of their commitment and kindness.
