Tubah: Gendarmes extort 100.000FCFA each from persons who identified mutilated body

According to reports we gathered from sources in Bambui, Tubah Subdivision, North West Region of Cameroon, gendarmes last Sunday, September 12, 2021, arrested a good number of persons and collected as much as one hundred thousand francs each from them.

This was after a lifeless body of a family head, discovered on Saturday, September 11, 2021, was later identified.

Those who could raised the sum of five thousand francs demaded on the spot were let go while about six persons who could not pay the money were detained and released only after family members were able to raise one hundred thousand francs each.

“They collected 5,000FCFA each from those who could afford at that time. Those who couldn’t were driven to the brigade where their family members were forced to pay the sum of one hundred thousand francs each in order to secure their release,” said an eyewitness who did not want to be named for security reasons.

He added that the gendarmes told some people in the neighborhood that if they were angry, they should buy weapons and face them and that they get their orders only from the Presidency of the Republic.

The soldiers also went into Bambili and arrested those they described as scammers and accused them of killing the old man.

We are told the remains of the man were later buried by family members in Bambili on Monday, September 13, 2021.
