Two in police custody, manhunt continues over hacking of ELECAM Facebook page

Two men, Tata Narih Derrick and Vedzedze are to be presented before the State Prosecutor in the days ahead.

Detained at the judicial police headquarters in Yaounde for over four days now, the two confessed to having hacked the Facebook page of Elections Cameroon ( ELECAM) on June 23, 2020.

The two suspects are believed to have posted what authorities call “anti-patriotic words” on the Facebook page of Elections Cameroon.

Experts in cyber crimes from the National Agency of Information and Communication Technologies (ANTIC) responsible for tracking down the suspects say investigations are still on for more people connected to the action to be identified and apprehended.

At about 11pm on June 23, 2020, the hackers took over the management of the Facebook page of ELECAM posting that “The truth shall prevail. It’s just a matter of time” alongside the picture of the leader of the Cameroon Renaissance Movement party, Prof. Maurice Kamto.

At the moment, it remains unclear if the suspects have links with the CRM opposition political party that have been contesting the victory of President Paul Biya since 2018.

The chairman of ELECAM, Enow Abrams Egbe reacting to the posting on June 24th condemned the action promising that all the culprits will be brought to book.
